It’s been a while since I’ve posted, Cold and flu season combined with Christmas and new year has made for a very busy few weeks. But now we’re back in the swing of things and my son and I have been cooking up some fun new crafts to share with you; Starting with these cute handmade penguin bookmarks!
You will need
Popsicle sticks Pom poms Googly eyes Yellow paper Black foam (or card) Coloured pens or paints Stickers (optional)
Using paints or felt tips, decorate your popsicle stick and put it aside to dry.
Now to make your penguins face! To make the beak; take your yellow paper and fold it in half, using the fold as the base cut out a small triangle. You should end up with a folded diamond shape. Glue one half of the triangle to your black Pom Pom and leave the other side free. Then glue two googly eyes just above where you stuck the beak. Put aside to dry.
Now take your black Foam (or card) and cut out two wing shapes. Glue them centrally at the top of your popsicle stick.
Glue your penguin’s head on top of the wings. optionally add some stickers or decorations to your stick and your penguin bookmark is finished!

Winter is right around the corner and it’s getting cold outside. These wet and icy days are perfect for snuggly days inside with a fun winter craft. This paper plate penguin is adorable and simple – perfect for young children to make with their favourite grownups. My son loves crafts which require practising using scissors and this was a perfect opportunity for him to practise cutting around lines. the best part is – it doesn’t require any fancy materials!
You will need
2 paper plates white paper yellow paper black paint scissors glue
Glue your two paper plates together so that they are just overlapping. Turn your paper plates so that the backs are facing upwards, paint them black and put aside to dry.
Take your yellow paper and Cut out a diamond beak shape by folding your paper in half and cutting out a triangle from the fold line. you will also need to cut out two flipper shapes.
Now, from your white paper; cut out a balloon shape that is wider at the top than at the bottom, this will make your penguins white belly!
Finally you can make your penguin’s eyes by cutting out two white circles and two slightly smaller black circles.
Glue all your pieces in to place to finish your super cute paper plate penguin!
Today I’m sharing a craft a little outside of my usual. This Stuffed yarn wrapped Christmas tree is a bit too tricky for young children but is a craft I’ve always enjoyed making myself and wanted to share. This craft is perfect for making whilst snuggled up with a hot chocolate and a Christmas movie!
Glue 3 of your sticks together in a triangle shape. Then, cut the fourth stick in half and glue one half to the bottom of your triangle to make the tree trunk.
Take one end of your yarn and tie it in a knot around your tree frame.
Now it’s time to start wrapping the yarn around your Christmas tree! You need to pull the yarn tight on the first loop. Don’t worry about the corners on the first trip around, they’re easier to place on the second lap and this prevents them from being too thick.
loop your string round a second time, this time including corners. to make the corners easier I usually wrap one side to the middle and then bring the other side in to meet it. you will need to wrap the string a little more loose this time to prevent it separating the first layer and creating a gap.
Do a third wrap around to even out your Christmas tree. Then, to secure your tree either thread the loose end under your previous loops or use a glue gun to secure it at the back.
To make the loop to hang your decoration; take a length of string or yarn and thread one end under the wrapped yarn at the top of your tree. Tie the two loose ends together.
Take a length of your green yarn. attach it to the tree by tying it on or by using a glue gun. Then repeatedly wrap the yarn around your triangle horizontally to create a cage for your pom poms, make sure the rows are close enough together that the pom poms won’t fall out. secure the loose end as before.
Stuff your tree with pom poms by squeezing them in through the cage. Cut out a card star and stick to the top of your tree. Finish off by hanging your fab new decoration!

We’ve already began putting up our Christmas decorations and the house is starting to get that cosy Christmas feel with the lights and the tree. Although thanks to tiny hands the tree decorations are noticeably top heavy and a little sparse at the bottom! This year is the first one where my son really understands what’s going on, so its a big deal for us and him. That’s why this year were going full grotto and making as many decorations as we can and I absolutely love these cardboard tube Santa with reindeer we made today!
To make your Reindeer
You will need
Cardboard tube Brown paper (we used brown package paper) Brown pipe cleaners Pom Poms Googly eyes Glue Scissors
Take your carboard tube and place it on to your brown paper. Measure and cut a piece the same height as your tube and long enough to cover it. Glue one end of the paper into place on your tube then roll the length of the paper around the tube and glue down the loose end.
To make your antlers; fold your pipe cleaner in half to create the centre loop, then pinch either side upwards to create the shape you can see on the left. Twist the two loose ends together and squeeze out any holes.
Glue your two antlers in to place on the inside of your tube. Finish off your reindeer by giving him a big pom pom nose and some googly eyes!
To make Father Christmas
You will need
Cardboard tube Red paper Beige paper White paper Pom Pom bobble and nose Googly eyes Glue Scissors
As with the Reindeer; Take your carboard tube and place it on to your red paper. Measure and cut a piece the same height as your tube and long enough to cover it. Glue one end of the paper into place on your tube then roll the length of the paper around the tube and glue down the loose end.
To make Santa’s hat; cut out a curved triangle shape then add a pom pom to the top and a strip of white paper to the bottom and leave to dry if necessary
Next, you will need to cut out a beard and moustache from your white piece of paper. then, cut out a face shape from your beige paper.
Glue the face shape on to your tube followed by the beard and moustache. Give your Santa two googly eyes, a nose and optionally a mouth. To finish, glue the hat you made around the outside of the tube.

All these festive crafts have put us in a very festive mood! If I could I would be putting my tree up tomorrow, though I don’t think my other half would be on board quite yet! Christmas is getting closer and closer though and nativities are a big theme in our family right now with all the small people practising songs and waiting to hear what they are going to be dressing as! Hence the inspiration for this super cute wooden spoon nativity king!
You will need
A wooden spoon Popsicle stick Red and yellow foam 2 googly eyes Pencil and Pens Yarn/string Glue gun Scissors
Take your lollipop stick and place it horizontally across the neck of your spoon to create your king’s arms
Place your wooden spoon onto your chosen material. Take your pencil and draw your robe shape around you spoon. Make sure you robe is atleast half a cm wider than your Spoon king in all places so that you can easily glue both sides together. Cut out your shape and then use it as a template to make a second side of robe.
Take one piece of your robe and place a strip of glue from the armpit to the bottom on each side then stick the other side of your robe down on it in place. Once dry, slip your wooden spoon down inside the robe as in the picture above and then glue the two sides of arms together around the popsicle stick.
To give your king some hair; cut out some lengths of string and glue them in place around your spoon. For the beard; draw a little mouth on your king’s face and circle it in glue, then take a length of string and spiral it around the mouth starting inwards and finishing outwards.
To Finish your king, give him two eyes, a nose and a royal crown. Then decorate his robe with your favourite embellishments! we went with royal jewels and we think they look fab!
